What do we do?
The foundation was set up with 3 main objectives
Treatment Inclusivity
For more than a decade, First Cardiology Consultant Hospital in
Ikoyi, Lagos has been providing comprehensive cardiovascular care
to patients in Nigeria.
Modern Cardiovascular healthcare is expensive and not within the
means of most Nigerians. To increase accessibility to these
lifesaving therapies and increase awareness in the community on
prevention and treatment of heart diseases; the Healthy Heart
Foundation (HHF) was created
In September 2021; HHF in partnership with FCC, VOOM foundation
and ABUAD performed open heart surgeries on fourteen (14) indigent
patients from across the country; age range 18- 73 years.
In December of the same year still in partnership with VOOM
Foundation and ABUAD, we offered care to 9 indigent patients
giving them and their loved ones an early Christmas gift.
We have had a successful 2021 mission and plan on-going activities
bi-monthly going forward.
The care is not streamlined solely to major procedures ie Open
Heart Surgery; we also aim at providing care to patients requiring
minimally invasive / intermediate procedures ie Pacemaker
insertions.
A Learning Center
A critical challenge for the delivery of modern and efficient
healthcare in Nigeria is the dearth of skilled manpower in the
country. A challenged educational system at all levels of education
has taken its toll on the quality of human personnel even though the
average Nigerian is highly intelligent. In addition, unfulfilled
aspirations and the harsh economic climate has led to the mass
exodus of our best - already trained and experienced man power.
The Healthy Heart Foundation intends to provide advanced clinical
training in the following areas in an attempt to bridge yawning gap:
The learning center will be electronically linked to academic centers in the US and subscriptions to international learning resources.
FCC Healthcare Trust Research Center
There currently exists a “disease prevalence and Knowledge
paradox” in the world. Most of the diseases and ailments are
domiciled in the places around the world with the least knowledge
or technical knowhow to address them. In Nigeria, the scientific
contributions from our institutions fall far below what is
expected given the burden of disease spectrum we have in Nigeria.
There is no doubt that lack of funding exacerbates the dearth of
research productivity.
There however exists innumerable opportunities to access external
funds for research. The challenge however is the absence of
efficient research framework which makes it difficult for grant
applications from our Nigerian institutions to attract funding. A
critical (but absent) research infrastructure that needs to be
created to facilitate research is a Private COMPREHENSIVE
INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB).
The purpose of the IRB is to give independent assurance (to
prospective funding partners) that appropriate and best practice
measures are taken to protect the rights and welfare of the human
participants in a research study. In addition, the IRB will
provide experts in all areas of scientific research infrastructure
including;
The Research Center will also meet the local statutory requirement for registration with the Federal Research Ethics Committee as provided in the Nigerian National Health Act of 2014 as well the composition requirement
